President Trump just went after former President Barack Obama again, this time referencing a Washington Post report that he received top-secret intelligence that Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally ordered a cyber attack on America in order to get Trump elected.
The Washington Post published a quite lengthy report detailing the secret memo Obama received. Trump wanted to hone in on the line of an Obama administration official apparently saying they “choked.”
So, that’s what Trump had to say: now let’s focus on the facts.
President Obama personally authorized “planting cyberweapons” in Russian infrastructure before he left office and President Trump would have to personally decide if he wanted to use the measure – which he hasn’t. So, that’s on him.
The Obama administration also put out a statement through senior advisor Eric Shultz detailing the steps they took after learning about the Intel.
“This situation was taken extremely seriously, as is evident by President Obama raising this issue directly with President Putin; 17 intelligence agencies issuing an extraordinary public statement; our homeland security officials working relentlessly to bolster the cyber defenses of voting infrastructure around the country; the President directing a comprehensive intelligence review, and ultimately issuing a robust response including shutting down two Russian compounds, sanctioning nine Russian entities and individuals, and ejecting 35 Russian diplomats from the country.”
The truth is Obama ended up approving sanctions against Russia for the actions, at the same time Trump’s former national security advisor Michael Flynn was discussing the possibility of removing them under the incoming Trump administration, a phone call he lied about having.
Just a day earlier, Trump posted about the issue, as well.
But, here’s what Trump didn’t say: he himself was privy to the report the day he became president and even before that as president-elect and as a presidential candidate when all 17 intelligence agencies came out with the declassified information. All that information was made public. He has still denied multiple times he didn’t believe his own intelligence agencies. That’s what’s so disturbing about Trump’s latest outburst.
He was quickly put in his place then, too.
That was quite the tongue lashing and on point.
Here’s video of Trump denying Russia hacking the election after having won the election. Now, Trump’s tweet proves he admits Putin was personally behind it. It’s very appalling.
Also – remember the presidential debates? Hillary Clinton tore into Trump repeatedly after it was announced by the intelligence community that Putin was behind the attack. What did Trump do? He defended Putin and refused to believe it. Now Trump is telling us he finally believes it and it’s Obama’s fault. Makes sense right?
Here was what the Post put out earlier, the story Trump was referencing:
Early last August, an envelope with extraordinary handling restrictions arrived at the White House. Sent by courier from the CIA, it carried “eyes only” instructions that its contents be shown to just four people: President Barack Obama and three senior aides.
Inside was an intelligence bombshell, a report drawn from sourcing deep inside the Russian government that detailed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s direct involvement in a cyber campaign to disrupt and discredit the U.S. presidential race.
But it went further. The intelligence captured Putin’s specific instructions on the operation’s audacious objectives — defeat or at least damage the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, and help elect her opponent, Donald Trump.
Apparently, the information was so sensitive at the time that CIA Director John Brennan didn’t even want to put it in the Presidential Daily Brief, preferring instead to follow the same protocols used in Situation Room type meetings, such as the raid on Osama in Laden.
