It’s been a nail biting season and ITV Liar viewers have been hoping to see rapist Andrew Earlham finally brought to justice after managing to evade arrest in last week’s episode.
However fans were left more frustrated than ever when, in a shocking twist, it was revealed that Andrew is dead – and an episode full of shifting timelines means it could have happened anything up to three weeks earlier.
Now viewers have been left wondering who is responsible for the death with Laura, her sister Katie, DI Vanessa, her partner Jennifer – played by Jill Halfpenny – and new detective Charlotte among others all making strong suspects.
The evil surgeon had managed to evade arrest after police began pursuing two allegations of rape, prompting Detective Inspector Vanessa Harmon to launch a honeytrap plot.
She enlisted a new female detective to lure Andrew, but he foiled the plan at the last minute.
Dismayed at the fruitless investigation Laura Neilsen, played by Joanne Froggatt, took the law into her own hands hacking Andrew’s phone and discovering the address to his secret lair.
She recovered all the recordings of his sexual assaults and handed them over to the police who reassured her that he would finally be arrested and brought to justice.
However, as the finale drew to a close it was revealed that Andrew had been missing for three weeks – and viewers were shown his dead body lying in the mud near to where Laura had been seen canoeing.
Ioan Gruffudd’s evil character Andrew Earlham was seen in the closing moments of the show lying in the mud with a slashed throat after going missing for three weeks
Laura, played by Joanne Froggatt, is the prime suspect after spending months trying to prove Andrew was a rapist. Her sister Katie, played by Zoe Tapper, is a strong suspect – the slash to his throat perfectly clean and neat, something her nurse character would be capable of
New character and detective Charlotte, played by Laura Aikman, was furious at Andrew for foiling the police’s undercover operation – she could have lashed out
Jill Halfpenny played Jennifer, DI Vanessa Harmon’s partner, she was angry at not being able to protect the mother of her child from the rapist. Pregnant Vanessa, played by Shelley Conn, was disappointed with the failure of the police operation
ITV surprised viewers by revealing there will be a second series of the hit drama – picturing both lead character
The Liar finale left viewers with more questions than answers as they frantically speculated on the list of potential killers
The final scene showed a person who appeared to be blonde rowing in a canoe before cameras zoomed in to Andrew’s dead body in the same marshes.
Viewers rushed to Twitter to share their theories: ‘Jennifer is going to be the undoing of smug Andrew, she has that look in her eye.’
‘Jill Halfpenny killed him then,’ suggested one.
Others were still trying to process what had happened: ‘Yes, hello ITV? I CAN’T EVEN DEAAALLLL #Liar’
‘Ahh itv’s Liar has me on the edge of my seat, Ioan Gruffudd what an amazing actor,’ said another.
ITV confirmed a second series will happen at the end of the episode leading viewers to speculate what it will be about and with a killer on the loose there’s certainly enough fodder…
Suspect one: New detective Charlotte
Andrew had been toying with a vial of date rape drug GHB moments before his new girlfriend – undercover detective Charlotte – arrived at his house for dinner, hoping to trap him she took a sample of her drink with a syringe after he poured a glass.
Unfortunately he saw her and quickly pieced together the operation, leaving her furious that she had messed up the case against him.
Viewers were gripped by the ending, with some suggesting who they thought was the guilty culprit
Viewers began to speculate what could happen in the second series, with one wondering if Andrew’s body will be found
Suspect two: Katie, Laura’s sister
Laura had tried to warn Charlotte about Andrew, not knowing who she was, and decided to steal his phone with the help of her estranged sister Katie – who Laura discovered had cheated with her ex-boyfriend Tom.
She called upon her sister to grab the phone from his locker at work, with Katie telling her sibling that she missed her.
Katie – who could potentially be a strong suspect in Andrew’s death considering as a nurse she is well trained with a scalpel – said: ‘I’d do anything for you, you know that, even when you’re angry at me.’
In the closing scenes a person – who appeared to be blonde – was rowing in the marshes, the same spot Laura had been in the very first episode
But it wasn’t clear who the person was, or when it occurred. And close by Andrew’s body lay decomposing – potentially being there for three weeks
Laura was elated to learn that she had been able to help crack the case after taking vital evidence to the police
Andrew had been toying with a vial of GHB moments before his new girlfriend – and undercover detective – Charlotte turned up to his home for dinner
Other slammed detective Charlotte for ruining the undercover operation, calling her the ‘worst ever’, while one said that Jennifer should go after him
Suspect three and four: Jennifer and DI Vanessa Harmon
Jill Halfpenny’s army character Jennifer had been seen in an earlier episode when her partner Detective Inspector Vanessa Harmon had video called her. She returned in the final episode where she learned of Vanessa’s rape – furious she wasn’t there to protect her.
After Vanessa informed her of the botched undercover operation Jennifer issued an eerie warning about Andrew not being arrested: ‘It’s not good enough!
‘He attacked you in our house, he needs to face the consequences for that.’
The army officer has the skills to tackle a man and slash his throat – potentially with Vanessa’s help – and the DI was nowhere to be seen when Laura tried to inform her she had found the recordings of Andrew sexually assaulting his victims.
Jennifer was upset that her partner’s attacker had not been brought to justice and warned that his actions had ‘consequences’
After Laura arrived at the address she had found of Mia Lenzkova – where Andrew had visited in the previous episode – the woman was seen making a phone call to him with a warning
The teacher – who had been trying to move on – discovered Andrew’s recordings, and nearly vomited as she watched Vanessa’s rape with Andrew’s voice clearly audible in the background
Suspect five: Laura
The entire series saw Laura attempting to prove Andrew’s guilt with many doubting her until Vanessa made her own accusations.
Viewers were stunned to learn that the surgeon had drugged her in episode two and then went on to rape Vanessa in her own home after breaking in.
In the finale it appeared after several months Laura was ready to move on again with her new love interest Ian – but she couldn’t resist meddling.
She enlisted the help of her ex Tom, now fired from his police role, hacking Andrew’s phone and discovering details of a woman named Mia Lenzkova who’s home the rapist had visited in the penultimate episode.
Although Mia was seen making a phone call warning Andrew, Laura could have had plenty of time to hunt him down with his disappearance proving a perfect cover.
When the police arrived at Andrew’s home, his son Luke answered the door saying his father wasn’t there – but it isn’t clear whether he was already missing or dead at this point
Suspect five: Luke Earlham
Andrew manipulated his son into providing him with a crucial alibi.
At first he was more than happy to help his father out, but as time passed and the video recordings were leaked to the press Luke appeared angry.
He answered the door when the police arrived but after seeing comments made by other people online about him taking after his father there’s a chance he took out his anger and killed him.
